Automate your DR Playbook
When a disruption occurs, many plans, of several types (Crisis Management, Business Continuity, and Disaster Recovery) may need to be activated. The efficient allocation of tasks and hand-offs among that complex web of plans can be a headache – unless those actions are automated, based on predetermined roles. Automation can also enable the ability to monitor, measure and manage the response to achieve defined business outcomes.

Executive Decision Support
During a business disruption, executives need insight into the impacts and causality chain to make informed decisions about response and recovery. Those critical decisions can’t be made without data; data compiled and updated before the disruption occurs. Business Continuity planning isn’t just about writing Plans – it should also build the information that will be needed for Decision Support.

Adaptive Plan Structures
Flexibility is critical to effective Incident Response. Plans that can change dynamically enable an effective response – regardless of the cause or impact. Adaptive plan structures should allow predetermined scenarios to be modified by Incident Commanders – enabling them to add or omit plans based on situational requirements. They should allow assignment of responders to tasks based on time-of-day, location or availability and enable skipping Plan tasks (or whole sections) to fit the real-world situation.

Real-Time Analytics / Dashboards
Incident Response demands a constant stream of information – from many sources to a multiple stakeholders. To Incident Commanders needing to understand what resources are available. To Executives needing to keep their staff informed. To Responders needing to know when predecessor tasks are complete, so they can proceed. A BCM program that gathers, organizes and automates the right information properly can build the ability to monitor, measure and manage both the program and any potential disruption.
